Here are some easy tips to help you navigate hurricane season and ensure you're well-prepared for any potential storms that may come your way.

Create an Emergency Kit

Having a well-stocked emergency kit is essential. Create or double-check your equipment at the beginning of every hurricane season to ensure your supplies are in order. Certain items start to be in short supply when a storm is near. Your kit should include items such as:

• Non-perishable food items (canned goods, granola bars, etc.)

• Bottled water (at least one gallon per person per day)

• Flashlights and extra batteries

• First aid kit and ten days’ worth of prescription medications

• Extra clean clothing and blankets

• Battery-powered or hand-crank radio

• Fully charged portable chargers for your cell phone

• Important documents (insurance policies, identification, etc.) in waterproof bags

• Cash (ATMs and credit card readers may not be available during network or power outages)

Have a Plan and Stay Informed

One of the most crucial aspects of hurricane preparedness is having a plan of action and staying informed.

• Keep an eye on reliable sources of information such as the National Hurricane Center (NHC), local news stations, and weather apps.

• Make sure to move items on your patio inside your apartment.

• Move items off the floor of your apartment to help keep them safe in case of flooding.

• Fill your car with gas – you never know when you may need to evacuate, and gas supplies may run low.

• Evacuate when instructed. Emergency relief will not come into places that were ordered to evacuate until after the storm has cleared.

Make sure your Renter’s Insurance is up to date!

Renter’s Insurance is crucial at all times, especially during storm season. Make sure your policy is current and up to date.

• Take photos or videos of the items in your apartment before any storm occurs to support a potential insurance claim.

• Ensure your policy covers enough to replace all items inside your apartment, including electronics, furniture, kitchen supplies, and clothing.
